Introduction to Clinical Supervision for Clinical Supervisors in Mental Health Nursing
We are very pleased to have been commissioned by the HSE to provide this particular course to nominated Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing Staff from Newcastle Hospital, County Wicklow. This course will support HSE staff to enhance their knowledge of the practice of Clinical Supervision.
The course provides foundational knowledge and skills to enable registered mental health nurses in the supervisory role to develop, facilitate and engage in supervisory relationships within the identified model. The course also ensures that organisational expectations and requirements are clear. The programme will be delivered in 4 modules, three of which will be provided by e–learning. The final module will provide practical skills and will be delivered via Zoom.

Mental health nurses are committed to continued professional development with a focus on practice and engagement with the service user. The provision of effective clinical supervision is integral to this process.
The course provides foundational knowledge and skills to enable registered mental health nurses in the supervisory role to develop, facilitate and engage in supervisory relationships within the identified model. The course also ensures that organisational expectations and requirements are clear. The programme will be delivered in 4 modules, three of which will be provided by e–learning. The final module will provide practical skills and will be delivered in a classroom environment.
1. To introduce foundational theory on clinical supervision, its functions, dynamics and the processes involved |
2. To outline models of clinical supervision and their application to practice |
3. To ensure participants are aware of the need for and how to ensure self care within the supervisory process |
4. To brief participants on administrative processes including policy and documentary procedures |
5. To provide opportunity for participants to practice core skills for clinical supervision |
Content, (to include Theoretical and Clinical input if appropriate)
Module 1: Introduction to Clinical Supervision: 4 online sessions (max 20 mins each with an excercise on completion)
- Introduction to Clinical Supervision.
- Differences between management and Clinical Supervision.
- Functions of Clinical Supervision.
- The process of Clinical Supervision.
Module 2: Working with the Model of Clinical Supervision: 5 online sessions (max 20 mins each)
- Proctor’s model – theory and application
- Learning theory and the role of the Supervisor.
- Reflection and models of Reflection.
- Self care and Self Reflection for clinical supervisors
Module 3: Practicalities of Clinical Supervision : 3 online sessions (max 20 mins each)
- Clinical Supervision National and local policy.
- Legal and ethical Issues
- Activity Planning in Clinical Supervision
Module 4: Workshop:Via Zooom
The live Zoom workshop will take place on Thursday 22nd July from 2pm-5pm. Your attendance at this live session is required. You will be sent further details on how to access the Zoom session in advance of its delivery. Following this live session, a multiple choice questionnaire will be released on the ICHAS LMS and must be completed by Friday 30th July 2021.
