DBT is an evidence-based and specialised form of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, developed by Marsha Linehan, PhD, in the early 1990s to treat individuals with suicidal urges, particularly those with borderline personality disorder. Since then, Linehan’s Biosocial model of DBT has been adapted and proven to be beneficial for a wide range of mental health issues like mood disorders, suicidal ideation, and for working with clients presenting with challenging behavioural patterns or who may experience their emotions very intensely. In addition to sharing elements with Psychodynamic and Gestalt approaches, the defining features of DBT include principles of Behaviourism, Mindfulness, and Dialectical Philosophy. This series of interactive lectures will draw on the work of Linehan to introduce a range of tools and strategies for implementing comprehensive Dialectical Behaviour Therapy across an array of settings.
Over 3 evenings the course will look at the background and key aspects of DBT and how it can help practitioners to understand their clients more completely. It will have both didactic and interactive elements and will focus on how a knowledge of DBT can be of benefit to the already established integrative therapeutic approach of the participants.
The course will focus on the following areas:
• The Philosophy of Dialectics
• Mindfulness as a core element of DBT, with focus on Acceptance and Change.
• Concepts of Distress Tolerance to learn to bear emotional discomfort.
• Emotion Regulation Skills to understand and manage emotions.
• Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills in relation to respect, validation and assertiveness.
• Areas of application and relevant strategies, such as Motivational Interviewing, to inspire behavioural change.
