The topic this week isn’t as serious as previous ones but it’s something we wanted to highlight. Trying to take some timeout, especially in the 24/7 era of technology can be a real challenge (how often has your phone gone off and you’ve checked it as quickly as possible?).
80% of people check their phone first thing in the morning. But what about setting aside time for yourself to switch off? This can have a big benefit for your mental health and well being. After all, we’re only human and burnout can be a serious issue.
If you’re looking for something to do this weekend that will help you when it comes to your mental health here are a couple of things to try out.
Take Time to Laugh
It’s as simple as that. Adults laugh only 20 times a day, in comparison kids laugh 400 times a day. Laughing can be a great way to reduce anxiety. So why not have a laugh with friends, check out some shows on YouTube or enjoy a show on Netflix. Take some time and just laugh.
Spend some Time with Pets
Have a dog, cat or other pet? Spending time with a furry friend lowers the stress hormone cortisol and boosts oxytocin which makes you happier. If you have a pet why not go for a walk or spend time with them. Here’s some inspiration for you from #LoveYourPetDay

Be a Tourist in your own Town
When was the last time you checked out some of the tourist attractions on your own doorstep? For example how many have visited King Johns Castle? Limerick, in particular, has some terrific spots to check out and if you’re looking for some free places to check out here is a useful guide. It can also be a great way to look at your area and surroundings from a different perspective.
Take 30 Minutes to go for a Walk in Nature
Whether it’s a stroll in the park or a hike being out in nature can increase energy levels, reduce depression and also boost well-being. The great thing as well is there are some terrific spots around Limerick to head off for a walk as this video from Limerick.ie shows.
Go off the Grid
Leave your phone at home for a day and disconnect from the constant alerts and other interruptions. Rather than talk with someone over the phone why not catch up with someone in a cafe (here’s a guide to the top 10 locally). This one will more than likely be the most challenging but it has its benefits.
