Introduction

This module provides a grounding in theories of human development from a range of perspectives and examines the implications for counselling or psychotherapeutic practice. The module will encourage the student to develop their own understanding of human being and the range of developmental processes that take place throughout the human life-span. This will inform their practice and provide the groundwork for further psychological study.

This programme contains one 10 ECTS Credit module from the first year of our degree programme.

The Certificate in Human Development takes places Part-time. This course is designed to enable students to understand a range of theories of human development and to consider its application in their professional lives in areas such as counselling.

This module is 10 credits from the first year of the BA in Counselling Skills and Psychotherapy/Addiction/Youth Studies within ICHAS College. upon successful completion of this module you will receive an ICHAS College Certificate with a record of Credits for this module (10ECTS).

Successful participants on the Certificate programme have the option to progress on to the BA degree programmes at the College. Should you wish to proceed with the ICHAS Degree Programme, tuition fees for this degree will be reduced, pro-rata (€500.00) by the course fee paid to obtain the Certificate in Hunan Development. Students would also be exempt from class attendance for this module on the B.A. Programmes.

 Can I study this programme on a full or part-time basis?

This programme is available only on a part-time basis and will run as per above schedules.

Fees

A central tenet of ICHAS is the provision of flexible and affordable education for all. In line with the Universities and Institutes of Technology, the fees for the Certificate in Human Development are €600. Students can pay in installments if preferred.

This Certificate module in Human Developement will look at a range of theories of human development including biological, psychological, social and psychosocial. The theories will be examined in the context of their understanding of the human person and the relevance to counselling practice. Students will study a range of approaches to explaining the process of development across the life-span and explore some of the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. The module will cover the theories of key psychological thinkers of the twentieth century, including Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, Victor Frankl, and Erik Erikson. The module will then explore a range of other theories of development, including moral, religious and cognitive development.

Structure of Course

The subjects covered are designed to demonstrate an understanding of a range of theories of human development, providing participants with foundation level skills:

On completion of this module students will be able to:-

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of a range of theories of human development
  2. Outline Sigmund Freud’s theory of human development
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the theories of development of Alfred Adler, Victor Frankl and Erik Erikson
  4. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to human development

How will I be assessed?  The assessment for this programme is a written essay format.

Joining ICHAS at diploma level, my aspiration was to discover what counselling was about. After the diploma and through the Level 8 and Level 9 programmes, it became more about discovering who I was and then becoming a reflective counsellor. Understanding my self was most important if I was to help others with their journey. An additional benefit from this course was meeting so many different people from different backgrounds and with different views which taught me more about working with people, as a client or otherwise.

The college, course, staff and peers enabled this journey for me, where I have become a more holistic person. Now that I have ended up with a Masters in Counselling & Psychotherapy through the various challenges along the way is a great achievement for me.

I came into ICHAS knowing that I wanted to help and work with people. Currently in my third year and all I can say is that I am amazed by how much I have grown both as a person and as a student. I was out of education for two years before starting and had fears and reservations about my ability as an academic and still not fully sure what I wanted to do with my life. The environment here compared to University’s or Institutes is not focused on just delivering the content and getting you through your degree or masters. Here they are looking at the individual behind the books and making sure that each student receives the same quality engagement that I have not seen anywhere else. ICHAS has allowed me over the last three years to see my true potential and ability through the stimulating learning environment here. I recommend this college to anyone looking into the areas of Counselling and Psychotherapy due to the high level of engagement with peers and lecturers.
