Introduction

The Certificate in Counselling & Psychotherapeutic Skills & Practice takes places over 10 weeks. This course is designed to give students a real insight into the area of counselling in addition to developing foundation level skills in the discipline.

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will obtain 10 ECTS credits on the National Framework of Qualifications. This module is 10 credits from the first year of the BA in Counselling Skills and Psychotherapy/Addiction/Youth Studies within ICHAS College and successful participants on the certificate programme have the option to progress on to the BA degree programmes at the College.   Should you wish to proceed with the ICHAS Degree Programme, tuition fees for this degree will be reduced, pro-rata (€500.00) by the course fee paid to obtain the Certificate in   Counselling & Psychotherapeutic Skills and Practices 1. Students would also be exempt from class attendance for this module on the B.A. Programmes.

 Can I study this programme on a full or part-time basis?

This programme is available only on a part-time basis and will run 1 evening per week over 10 weeks from 6.00 to 10pm (Normally Tuesday or Wednesday)

Fees

A central tenet of ICHAS is the provision of flexible and affordable education for all. In line with the Universities and Institutes of Technology, the fees for the Certificate in Counselling & Psychotherapeutic Skills & Practice are €800 inc examination fee. Students can pay in instalments if preferred. Please note that the fees to complete this courses in Dubin and Cork are €850 inc examination fee.

All fees are fully protected under our Protection of Enrolled Learners’ Policy in line with QQI requirements.

Structure of Course The Certificate in Counselling & Psychotherapeutic Skills & Practice is a 10 week programme. The subjects covered are designed to be both practical and theoretical leading to a broad understanding of counselling as a profession and providing participants with foundation level skills in:

How will I be assessed? The assessment for this programme involves a client interview and an evaluation.

Who Awards My Qualification and how well recognised is it? The course was revised in 2015 and is validated by Quality and Qualification Ireland (QQI). QQI is an Irish awarding body and set standards for awards they make on the NFQ. QQI have overall responsibility for the quality of 3rd level academic programmes in Ireland. Where can I progress to on completion of the course? Upon successful completion of the Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Skills and Practice, students will be eligible to progress to the BA in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

The Certificate in Counselling & Psychotherapeutic Skills & Practice is intended to be an introductory course to the area of counselling and psychotherapy. You will benefit from enhanced communication skills including active listening, and come to better appreciate the role of empathy and understanding in many contexts.

The certificate will not entitle you to practice as a counsellor. For that, a longer and more intensive programme of study such as the BA in Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies is necessary. However, for those who wish to enhance their empathy, communication and listening skills, and take advantage of the benefits this will afford in their personal and professional life; the certificate is an excellent choice.

The Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Skills and Practice has many unique features that make it one of the leading programmes of this type in Ireland, these include;

Joining ICHAS at diploma level, my aspiration was to discover what counselling was about. After the diploma and through the Level 8 and Level 9 programmes, it became more about discovering who I was and then becoming a reflective counsellor. Understanding my self was most important if I was to help others with their journey. An additional benefit from this course was meeting so many different people from different backgrounds and with different views which taught me more about working with people, as a client or otherwise.

The college, course, staff and peers enabled this journey for me, where I have become a more holistic person. Now that I have ended up with a Masters in Counselling & Psychotherapy through the various challenges along the way is a great achievement for me.

I came into ICHAS knowing that I wanted to help and work with people. Currently in my third year and all I can say is that I am amazed by how much I have grown both as a person and as a student. I was out of education for two years before starting and had fears and reservations about my ability as an academic and still not fully sure what I wanted to do with my life. The environment here compared to University’s or Institutes is not focused on just delivering the content and getting you through your degree or masters. Here they are looking at the individual behind the books and making sure that each student receives the same quality engagement that I have not seen anywhere else. ICHAS has allowed me over the last three years to see my true potential and ability through the stimulating learning environment here.
