Certificate in Understanding Addiction

The Certificate in Understanding Addiction has been specifically designed for those who want to develop key foundation-level knowledge and understanding in the area of Addiction. The Certificate is an ideal introduction to the world of Addiction, offering participants the opportunity to explore and distinguish between substance misuse, abuse and addiction and identifying and assessing the merits of key theoretical developments in the field of addiction. On successful completion of this Certificate, participants will received a College Certificate in Theoretical Aspect of Addiction. Please note this course is a 10 ECTS module from the BA in Counselling and Addiction Studies and has an assignment attached. For those who do not wish to complete the associated assignment, the College will issue a Certificate of Attendance.

Limerick: The next Limerick Certificate in Understanding Addiction will take place part-time next Spring starting TBA, for 6 weeks (Evenings 6.00 pm to 10.00 pm and Saturday 9:30 am-4.30pm) in Walton House, Lonsdale Road, Castletroy, Limerick

The Certificate in Understanding Addiction takes places over 8 weeks. This course is designed to give students a real insight into the area of counselling in addition to developing foundation level skills in the discipline.

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will obtain 10 ECTS credits on the National Framework of Qualifications. You will receive a College Certificate and a record of Credits on successful completion of the module.

This module is 10 credits from the first year of the BA in Counselling Skills and Psychotherapy/Addiction/Youth Studies within ICHAS College and successful participants on the certificate programme have the option to progress on to the BA degree programmes at the College.   Should you wish to proceed with the ICHAS Degree Programme, tuition fees for this degree will be reduced, pro-rata (€500.00) by the course fee paid to obtain the Certificate in   Counselling & Psychotherapeutic Skills and Practices 1. Students would also be exempt from class attendance for this module on the B.A. Programmes.

 Can I study this programme on a full or part-time basis?

This programme is available only on a part-time basis and will run 1 evening per week over 8 weeks from 6.00 to 10pm

Structure of Course The Certificate in Understanding Addiction is an 8 week programme. The subjects covered are designed to be both practical and theoretical leading to a broad understanding of counselling as a profession and providing participants with foundation level skills in:

Certificate in Understanding Addiction
Defining Substances, Misuse and Addiction
Evolutionary Theories of Addiction
Motivational Behaviour and the concept of ‘Excess’ in Addiction
Psychological and Sociological theories of Addictive behaviour and theories of prevention
Theories of self-control and mediating factors and Theories of Stress reduction and substance use
Biological theories of Dependence and Understanding Coping and the substance use continuum

 The assessment for this programme involves a client interview and an evaluation.

Where can I progress to on completion of the course? Upon successful completion of the Certificate in Understanding Addiction, students will be eligible to apply for a place on  the BA in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
